Proper Shrub And Hedge Trimming

Shrub and Hedge Grooming

The shrubs and trees that accent your property are a living, growing asset to your home and property.  Trimming your shrubs can save you money in the long run. A well maintained landscape is one that is kept at an ideal size and fullness through routine trimming and pruning.  Scrubs and hedges may be trimmed monthly during the growing season. By trimming them back they’ll grow more slowly. The slower a shrub grows the thicker and better it will look.  Proper maintenance is important to keep its size under control as well as to ensure that shrubs stay healthy.  Failure to do so can result in the overgrowth of shrubs causing them to outgrow their environment. Shrubs not receiving proper maintenance can also lose their health and appearance value far earlier than they should.  Overgrown, unhealthy shrubs can be resurrected by trimming 1/3 of the plant per year.

Before beginning, research what kind of shrub we are working with; what the natural shape of the shrub is, conical, globe, upright, or contorted; and what conditions the plant requires, such as sunlight, shade, wet soil, or dry soil. Good gardeners also typically avoid pruning after it has just rained or when the air is damp, as wetness encourages spore growth.

Hedges should be trimmed so that they are wider at the bottom for full healthy growth.

Flowering shrubs however, should be pruned only after the plant’s flowers have faded, because this is when the shrub begins to grow buds for the next season.

We typically avoid pruning after it has just rained or when the air is damp, as wetness encourages spore growth.  For the same reason, we sanitize our equipment before each job.
